I don’t think Rapechel was being fair with her racial criticism of Avatar.
The first thing she said was that all the aliens were black. If you go to this page http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/fullcredits
and look at the Navi credits you’ll see:
Zoe Saldana – Puerto Rican and Dominican (fluent in spanish)
Wes Studi – Native American
Peter Mensah – Ghanaian American
Nicole Dionne – Caucasian
Nikie Zambo – Caucasian
Laz Alonso – African American
I think it was probably the intentions of the filmmakers to reference a mashup of ethnic looks to create the look of the Navi.
Also, I don’t understand what’s offensive about the colonialist metaphor. The Humans were basically being portrayed as malevolent invaders who are after the resources of the planet. I don’t see how that translates into the filmmakers having a white boy colonialist jizz fest…
There are other points but I’m bored now.

Avatar, racist? Ughh. If a soldier were to help protect the “enemy” (no matter what race they were) and then were to eventually flip over to their side to fight for their cause.. That’s racists?
I saw that movie a month ago and im not sure which i like more, the movie itself or listening to people discuss it.
Madge, if i donate to the grums will you use that money to go see it? Ill even give you enough to see it at the Imax, assuming there is an iMax in Chicago, im sure there is.
Would love to hear your thoughts on that damn movie.
Anyway, damn good showgram.

To me, Avatar is like “The Hero with a 1000 Faces” in 3D. Is it racist? Sure, but so is humanity. This movie shows humanity beyond PC, reveals its deeper essence like myths do. It was a pleasant surprise for me to find this, even though I wasn’t eager to see it at first.
I will use the money to download it from the pirate bay and watch it.

Really enjoyed the conversation about the racism with Ragan. Proud to say it’s been a few years and have yet to have my “Line” crossed. It makes me curious as to what my line would be.

Love these grums with Rach and Ragan. Ya’ll work well together. However, Rach kind of completely misses the point of Avatar, even as pedestrian as it was with criticizing colonialism and embracing nature, native life forms/cultures. The movie was about finding beauty, love and god in the Africanized Navi people; it wasn’t demeaning racism.

Great show with Rach and Ragan. Was dying over the gym reviews Ragan was reading. Also agree with the above comments vis-a-vis Avatar. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Have them on more often.
