One can definitely sense the irritation with the ‘mum’s mafia’ in this podcast. The assumption is that Madge is sitting in the car not ‘dressed’ so to speak. I wonder if there is the same phenomenon in the US of ‘mum’s on the school run’ i.e. that there seems to be more traffic on the road during term time, than when the kids are on holiday.
Madge also deals with the issue of popular culture. Is ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ part of popular culture because it is a medical drama watched by a lot of people (it is beginning to get a large audience in the UK). Madge’s fear of the brain-rotting effect of Grey’s Anatomy is unfounded. It is a drama, not a soap or a ‘reality’ show and just because you watch a popular programme and speak about it, that doesn’t necessarily mark the beginning of your mental decay. Now if Madge started reading the National Enquirer, believing it, obsessing about Anna Nicole Smith, reading many of our UK trashy celebrity magazine (‘Closer’, ‘Heat’ anyone) and wanting to be a wag/chav/shav then I for one would be mortified.
