This is a crazy story. Most countries here in Europe have public healthcare, which sounds great but there can be huge waiting lists even just to be seen by a doctor or specialist, nevermind surgery.
A lot of people have private healthcare so that they can skip some of these long queues. But health insurers have started gearing back coverage and jacking up prices. You also have to do the leg work yourself to confirm the hospital, doctor and all other specialists involved subscribe to your specific insurer and the specific policy. A friend ended up thousands out of pocket because while unconscious, she was sent to a private emergency department and was admitted to another private hospital selected by well meaning medical professionals. Only to discover when she woke up that none of them were actually covered by her insurer.

But the insurer would have covered all of this if she had to gone to another A&E and private clinic about a kilometer away. It’s total bullshit.

But at least in Europe we don’t need pre-approval to have the necessary medical procedure carried out. It’s just a matter of finding the correct doctor/hospital combination for your policy. Doctors end up wasting their own mental energy trying to figure out where best to refer you rather than focusing on your health outcomes.

Health insurers are the pits!
