When I first heard about Ron Paul I was intrigued by him but the more I heard about him the more I didn’t like him. Like you said in this show the tech crowd is flocking to him without realizing a god damned thing about him. I think the main thing they are flocking to is his anti-war philosophy. Tech geeks (the ones who think they are but aren’t) see that and go “OH OKAY, let’s vote for him. Better than Bush at least.”
I agree with everything you said (except one thing, which I’ll get to in a moment). I won’t be voting for him because I personally, desperately need the health insurance and unless I can get a job that offers it there is no way in hell I’ll be able to get it. There are so many other people who are in worse shoes than I am who don’t even have a roof over their heads and these idiots are flocking to dumb asses.
The issue that I am somewhat not in agreement with you on is gun control. I’ve slept since I listened to this so I don’t remember exactly what you said but coming from the South where guns are prevalent everywhere you look for hunting they don’t bother me. My family hunts all the time and if it wasn’t for hunting we would not have food on the table a lot of times. HOWEVER, with that said I do not think that it takes a machine gun to go out and kill a deer to put food on the table, protection from wild dogs, snakes, bears, coyotes, panthers, etc.
I also feel as though even if legislation is put into place to make it harder for people to get guns/ammunition you are simply hindering the people who have a legitimate reason to purchase a gun. It’s exactly like DRM in my opinion.
I don’t think Ron Paul is going to be elected, I hope not. Frankly, I don’t like any of the other candidates and I think we’re screwed with all of them.
Screwed with ALL of them? What’s wrong with Kucinich though? Seriously? As an outsider from another country, I really don’t understand why more lefties aren’t supporting him other than him apparently being “unelectable” (an empty Fox News term that really means nothing).
A++
This needed to be said. Paultards are fucking delusional and generally mentally ill.
My gut level feeling is that Ron Paul will be no different from the other Republicans in the long run. What he says makes him seem “different” — and different is better — right?
Yeah. Right.
Kucinich, on the other hand, is not like the others. In fact most from my perspective people in Ohio think he’s a little nuts but in a way I’m glad he is because I think that if he wins he just may stick by what he says in this election. I’m a personal friend of a former running mate of his and back in that day (early 80’s late 70’s) Kucinich was a bit off but I also think he’s learned something in the past 30 years — I know I have. I also think he has something because the media seems to be down playing him and I believe the media is heavily influenced by the bigger politicians. I like what Kucinich has to say and at this moment, he gets my vote. Unfortunately, I don’t trust any of the Republicans and at least half the the Democrats.
Also, love the 1 minute and 14 second commentary at the very end of your show. Madge Weinstein is a krusty old cunt and that’s the way we like her. Keep up the good work womyn!
Madge, you came across the word “collectivism” on Ron Paul’s page and immediately associated him with Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism. Simply because a person uses the terms “collectivism” (in order to incorrectly explain Racism) does not mean he is an Objectivist. Ron Paul is no Objectivist!
I certainly don’t agree with some of your political views, Madge, but I do like your show!
Your post-modern comedy is brilliant. This past semester I discovered a theory that is completely applicable to what your kind of comedy; Symbolic Inversion. (I’m a nerd! Sorry, but not really.)
😉
excuse my zillion typos
Read Atlas Shrugged then read ROn Paul’s platform. I don’t know if he is a strict objectivist but I do know that he practically plagiarizes Rand. If he is not an objectivist he is a copycat at best.
OH, and are you a philosophy student or what’s your deal?
I’m an English major who has read a lot. Never read Atlas Shrugged (although it’s actually on my list this Winter break), but I’ve read enough about it and understand Rand’s philosophy enough to know that Libertarians are evil, and Ron Paul is unquestionably not an Objectivist (although he may be a Rand-roid), however much he may appear to be one.
Ron Paul supporters are idiots. He has said some ridiculous shit, like that the Civil War didn’t need to be fought because slavery would have just ended anyway.
I can’t stand conservative “personal choice” arguments. It’s a load of bullshit designed to trick people into thinking that policies that only benefit the super-rich are good for them. If libertarians like Ron Paul had their way, we’d be living in corporate-dominated fiefdoms, with no recourse when those in power abuse us.
The saddest thing is that Ron Paul wouldn’t even be off the ground if there was one viable Democrat who would actually end the war.
Thanks for your deconstruction of Ron Paul. Very insightful!
I was also smacked in the face online with this whole “Ron Paul meme”.
“Who the fuck is Ron Paul?” I asked.
I went to his website like six months ago and discovered his libertarian views. He is a libertarian taking on the Republican mask, thinking he can maybe win THAT caucus.
He will never be the Republican candidate, no matter how much money he raises.
Ron Paul is for the complete dismantling of…
The FDA.
The UN.
The EPA.
The IRS.
The US Dept. of Education.
Roe V. Wade (and Free Choice)
The ATF.
Welfare for the poor, and illegal aliens. (Hmm, that won’t affect the crime rate!)
Hey Ron Paul, FUCK YOU!
People hear “he’s anti-war!” and then swarm over him like…ummm…bees or whatever else that swarms blindly and ignore everything else he stands for.
Anti-war? Well, golly gee! That’s cool! Me, too!
Anti-choice?
Whoops. Lost me.
Don’t care about the rest.
(well, I DO care, but I don’t care to hear it)
I’d like to make a couple of notes to provide a contrast to the rants. (this is the first I’ve heard of Ms. Weinstein, and so I I’m not commenting on her content or viewpoints per se).
1) for Andy, I’m a ‘tech geek’ — if by the smear you mean anyone having the ability to productively harness the power of internet and computers to share information — and I know a lot about Dr. Paul and I find that I agree with him on nearly all his personal views — except his personal view on being against abortion because of the “life-at-conception” fallacy. The thing about Dr. Paul is he wouldn’t use the Executive Branch to legislate Federally against or for abortion — either way he says the Fed should stay out of the bedroom.
2) for Luis, I know that I’ve never heard Dr. Paul say he considers him self an Objectivist. But of course, objectivism is a philosophy and not a religion, so there are many elements of objectivism in his views on issues, and in the concepts he uses — racism as collectivism and freedom rooted in self-interest. I do know however Dr. Paul has said that he read in his younger years all of Ayn’s novels, and they were an influence on him.
3) for Jack, I can only speak for myself, but I’m no idiot. And Dr. Paul’s assertions seem to be well grounded on other people’s work — he doesn’t make his opinions up out of thin air (for example by calling people idiots for some superficial reason). For example, his anti-interventionist foreign policy is partially supported by the knowledge gained by a CIA agent who was responsible for helping bin Laden organize, weaponize, and radicalize their youth to oust the soviets in Afghanhstan. I know of two scholarly books that show how slavery in America was being morally condemned with increasing popularity in the states. “Antislavery Political Writings, 1833-1860” by C. Bradley Thompson, and “The South was Right” (don’t recall the authors)
4) for Father Time. Dr. Paul supports eliminating federal interference into our lives, per the Constitution. There’s nothing in the constitution that supports the existence (at taxpayer blood and expense) of the IRS, FDA, UN, EPA, Dept. of Educ., ATF, or a pro-choice OR pro-life national law. On the issue of abortion, he says each state should decide. Of course I still personally think a woman’s choice is her own, so I personally disagree with Dr. Paul’s personal views… but at least he wouldn’t seek power as President to impose his pro-life view at the Federal level !!
5) As for worrying about your welfare checks and health care affordability, you’ll find Dr. Paul would provide a separation of big corporations and health care policy, and wouldn’t kick people into the streets who are today totally dependent on their social security checks (that includes my parents). In fact, after telling my registered Democrat parents about all of Dr. Paul’s record, they said they would vote for him in the General Election. I think that says something about his integrity and record.
6) for Luis, if you haven’t read ALL of A.S., nor any of Ayn Rand’s other works, you can hardly lay claim to understanding objectivism, nor libertarianism.
Peace! Go Ron Paul !! http://www.ronpaul2008.com
