Thanks heaps, Madge. Considering how Adam had an instant reaction to Comic Strip Dickhead’s seemingly anti-semitic comments, I was floored that Adam didn’t go after this one with equal fervor.

I hate sterile, politically correct speech, but it’s high time that we ALL put a stop to this faggot as the ultimate pejorative shit. While groups like GLSN and other in-school efforts do address the destructive over-proliferation of this word, the Republican CEO of GLAAD is too busy kissing celebrity ass, the NLGTF is too busy contemplating their navels, and the HRC is too busy politicking to start a national conversation to put this epithet to bed in the same manner that the African-American groups did for not one, but TWO n-words.

Below is what I wrote to Adam. I won’t share Adam’s reply without his permission, though:

“Disappointing that you let the “fuck the faggots at XM” comment from hoodhype.com pormo fly, Adam. The context of the epithet’s usage promotes antigay hate speech and perpetuates the notion that “faggot” is an okay pejorative. The National Mental Health association estimates that high schools students in the US hear degrading words like faggots 26 times a day, and contributing to the culture of having “faggot” be the ultimate insult in US youth and urban culture also contributes to the thousands of suicides by marginalized kids each year.

I request you address what may have been a careless mistake. Saying shit like that is not OK. At all. ”

Adam did a soundseeing tour while flying a plane yesterday, so he didn’t address the issue.

Madge – you and other QPodders have many times referred to the young homosexual who feel so out of place that they become suicidal. Not being gay, myself, I think you’re right, I CAN’T know how that feels (though there are other ways people can feel like an outsider other than being homosexual). But I can tell you what can help the homosexual agenda and you’re already doing some of it:

First, one of the most powerful things you’ve played was a call a person made to you. The caller was presumably gay and his car had been completely violated by vandal thieves yet the police did nothing. He had a bumper sticker on his car that supported a gay cause. In the end, they poor guy was victimized, most probably, because he was homosexual. Because he was homosexual, no one of authority cared or helped. Though my listening to that is not the same as growing up feeling completely out of place due to my sexual preference, it did help me better understand that many if not all of the people the gay community each had a long trek to get some feeling of normalcy and happiness. That piece and others things like it leaves a lasting impression on people who care. And winning over the people who care is a good place to start because their caring doesn’t necessarily mean their informed.

Second, you are speaking out about these issues so everyone can better understand them. For a long time, I have personally treated the word “fag” just as I do the word “nigger”. As I told one of my gay friends, for the most part I leave the word “fag” to the gays to use on themselves as they wish, just as I do “nigger”. I believe it is good if you and other homosexuals make public where the line is to be drawn on what words to use for what purpose. I drew my line because for decades I’ve been supportive and sympathetic to the gay community – so I actually thought a lot about this subject. Most people are not going to think that much about it despite the fact they would probably rather not be offensive. Ask yourself this: how do we know “nigger” is offensive? Most likely because the African based people announced it to the world. Now we all know. Madge, you are doing your part to announce a clear concise message to the world – so everyone will know.

Keep up the nice work you lovely old crusty whore. (Can I call you “whore”? I hope that is not offensive).

It was actually “Madge Weinstein brown poop” – he makes “Madge Weinstein brown poop” – just like she did on Yeast2.com a couple of months ago. At first he was afraid to make poop on the potty but when he heard Madge do it – it sounded like a lot of fun. So he wanted to have a lot of fun, too.

Thanks for pointing this out Madge, I listened to that dsc, but I skipped over all the music and promo shit and missed it. That really, really pisses me off. I had to go listen to it, and it was worse than I expected. There is no excuse for saying anything like that, and putting something like that on your show and not making any sort of comment about it.

I really thought that Ragan had thw wrong impression of Adam after the ETHS interview. I thought he was honest, and cared in his own way. Now, I wonder if I was wrong and Ragan was right…

But Howard Stern has ALWAYS used the word “gay” in a derogatory way. I listened to his show for quite a while, but stopped about a month after 9/11, because I got sick of hearing him (and that unfunny coattailing bitch Robin Quivers) talk about how “gay” everything was when he thought it was lame or disagreed with it. And everytime someone called to disagree with them, they taunted them and made fun of them until the people got pissed off and sputtered (which they KNEW would happen). They didn’t even attempt to engage them or make them explain themselves, as you do (thereby giving them the chance to dignify their own point, however moronic). It WAS exactly like 8th grade. Howard’s Bully Pulpit. Howard’s Playground. Howard The Big Cheese. All About Howard.

And he was the big champion of free speech? Yeah, like Oprah–free as long as it’s free for him.

And now he bitches about how people haven’t followed him to Sirius to subscribe. Of course not! Who the hell wants to pay for that??

Madge, yesterday I listened to your show at work… (the intro part). I got so upset that I had so excuse myself from work and run outside to cry. ugh! It re-hacked many old memories about why it took me 35 of my 41 years to come out. I once was so in the closet and scare to be my true self, that I tried to commit suicide and then commented myself into a crazy house. That was only 5 years ago. I hate feeling like I’m not normal. Hearing the word faggot in that way… ugh! Shite! I’m starting to cry again. Shite! Why is it so hard to be true to yourself in this society? Ok, where’s my box of kleenex? f**k!

You know… I listened to that Daily Source code and I never even caught the word in that promo. I only understood it this time because you said it was there. I sincerely doubt that Adam noticed it either. I also doubt he listened to that whole promo before he played it. Kind of like when you add a piece to your show with 37 continuous seconds of silence, because you didn’t listen to it. I think you stepped way out of line here. There is nobody more needlessly foul mouthed than you.. and you have the nerve to get bent out of shape because Adam played a promo without analyzing it first for a word that might offend YOU. This from somebody who said on her latest show “You think I listen to this shit I put out?” A very bad move Madge. Contrition is in order… but somehow I am thinking I am not going to hear it. You should have thought this one out better. I’m a proud Qpodder member, but you went too far this time. You trashed one of your biggest supporters over NOTHING. Way to go.

OK, I think I need to intercede for Madge on this one…

First off, regarding the missed word: I think it’s a difference in perceptions. For people like Madge, myself, and many other posters here, the words “faggot” and “dyke” are words we’ve spent lifetimes listening to, so we’re probably more highly sensitized to hearing it than someone at whom those words were not directed daily. In this way, it’s possible that Adam didn’t catch the word (I haven’t heard the cast myself, so I don’t know how noticeable it was). Madge, however, being highly perceptive (and outspoken! It can’t be denied), picked up on it right away, as did Mizez Slocombe (even some of the other posters here hadn’t picked it up at first listen).

Also, while Madge uses lots of vulgarity, please understand that she is an activist, and tries very hard through her show to get people engaged and interested in their own communities. We’ve seen consistent evidence that people in America are disconnected from the world and seek to anesthetize themselves through pop/crap culture. Madge has realized by studying these folks that the only way to get their attention is to speak the language they understand: dirt! (It’s kind of like a crow chasing after something shiny.) We’re surrounded by “shock and not much awe,” so dramatic things are needed to gain attention.

Similarly, Madge uses hyperbole in an attempt to attract feedback. Good or bad, the idea is to get people talking. Frequently, she says things that are over the top just so that people will write in and argue. Then (unlike Stern), she will make them explain themselves. She never censors any of the posts on this board, for example.

So while it may seem gratuitous, it isn’t really needless. Many people won’t talk about the things Madge talks about, because it’s uncomfortable, even though it needs to be said. That creates a very uncomfortable environment sometimes, and makes us all very “trigger-happy.” Surely you’ve seen how we even insult each other on this board occasionally. Feelings do run high…

I hope this sheds at least a little light…while I don’t think Madge needs us to explain her words for her, I wouldn’t want to see her taking all the flak without pointing out all the good she does for our community. If it weren’t for her, there would be a LOT of things I wouldn’t know or do now, which have become routine for me. My awareness has truly been heightened.

Despite all the heightened rhetoric right now, I do know that Adam Curry is highly committed to podcasting and has given many people a voice where they wouldn’t have one in corporate/commercial media. I would just ask him to remember that there are many different kinds of slurs, and some words that may be commonplace or easily missed by some are actually deeply offensive to others.

Here here, P Dub. This is a shitty way to get your subscriptions up, Madge/Richard. Did you really post, “Well, perhaps I was wrong. I’ll think about it” on currry.com? Fuck you! If you want to make amends for shooting off your mouth (which we all do from time to time), then try “I’m sorry, Adam, I was angry when I recorded that”. This just goes to show what a silly publicity stunt this is. If you wanna say something, say it with your own voice. Tell us what Richard thinks, don’t hide behind your persona – because frankly anyone who takes Madge seriously needs therapy. You know I am a big supporter of you and appreciate what you stand for, your cuntributions to podcasting, and your integrity. But I thought your diatribe against Adam the other day was full of logical holes – I cringed, for example, when you said it was “OK that I say cunt because I’m a lesbian.” Most of your fans don’t think so yet, but you _will_ get labeled as a misogynist by more than just Rachel Kann with those kinds of comments…

As a proud faggot, I don’t really have a problem with just “the word” being bandied about for other uses – we in the gay community have owned it to the point where much of the sting has been taken out of it, in my opinion. It is JUST A WORD. Why should words offend YOU, of all people?

Adam in the past recent memory has only called out one person for racial slurs – CSB made some derogatory, anti-semitic comments. But it wasn’t the specific _words_ that triggered it – it was the context and the attitude CSB was showing towards Jewish people in general. I thought Adam’s response at that time was very appropriate and measured (and not overreactive at all.)

I don’t have a problem with “Faggots at XM” because it has nothing to do with gay people. You’ve pioneered the concept of repetition – using “off-limits” words to help show how ludicrous censorship is.

But if I didn’t know better I _would_ think this was some sort of set up between you and Adam to generate controversy and ratings – but I do know better, and suspect it’s just a case of you PMSing because you had a really crappy time at that shithole convention you went to.

First of all, thanks for yet MORE coffee! Secuntly, you’re right about this business with Adam. I’ve already made up with him so it’s not as bad as it seems. I’ll tell the truth about it on one of my shows but I’m trying to figure out whether or not to use my voice or Madge’s. It was a huge blunder but I can admit that I made a mistake. I was just being mental in the car but sometimes I forget how much impact and damage potential my words have. Turned out I made myself look like a huge asshole.

I just wanted to say that I’m sick of being called a faggot. However, this was the wrong place and the wrong circumstance. As always, I appreciate your honest feedback.

Yeah – I saw on insanefilms how little shit coffee you actually received and felt bad. 🙂 The stuff I sent is my current favorite – we toured the plantation and everything when we were in Kaua’i in January. How do you like it? It’s pretty potent as far as coffee goes.

I think it shows a lot of integrity that you admit an error in judgement like this. I think it’s too easy to get wrapped up in negativity and just assume the worst of people – from what I can tell (and from what you’ve said a bunch of times) Adam has good intentions.

There are certain people out there who will get you riled up about nothing – sometimes this makes for good material for a show but I can see the dangers here.. 🙂

What did you think of Adam’s comment about using the word “Republicunts” being hate speech? I had honestly never thought of it that way – and it _does_ further the divide between “us” and “them.” Painting them all with the same brush and hating them all equally isn’t exactly going to improve things…

back to “faggots” though – I think you brought up the point that gay suicide is a gigantic issue that no one talks about, and being called a “faggot” doesn’t help – but is there any evidence that _the word_ causes gay teens to go kill themselves? It probably has a lot more to do with their environment than just the word. I still think words are powerless by themselves.

Personally, there’s not much that offends me these days. I think that people who are offended by _anything_ generally need to wake up and take a step back and look at the bigger picture – I think it says more about them than it does about the person hurling the insult or slur. How can these people allow themsleves to be changed/controlled/aggravated or otherwise annoyed by _a word?_ If people refused to be offended by these words, the words would lose their power.

(I may differ here in my opinion than a significant segment of the gay community. 🙂

I think you were out of line calling Adam a bigot, etc. Your use of language leaves something to be desired, to say the least, but I understand it’s part of an act and I can get past it to some degree. But based on Adam saying “they’re only words!” as well as on your attack, I wanted to relate a story from the Jewish tradition (midrash), about the power of words:

A story is told of a man who went about the community telling lies and smearing the reputation of the rabbi. You’re probably familiar with the concept of lashon ha-ra – the Hebrew term for slander, gossip, rumor-mongering, and other negative uses of language. I won’t belabor the point here, but I wanted to be fair and make the comment to both you and Adam. I have a lot of respect for you, even if I find it difficult to listen.

I’ve heard your podcast over at Yeast2, but I still think you had a major point, even if the instance was small it’s insidious – I get the ‘that’s so GAY!’ all time and sometimes call it out – it’s depressing and not a slight minor thing as people say – it’s not funny or big.

HELP!!! I’m in a bit of a DRAMA right now, I told this guy, dalas, that I was ofened by the way he used the word gay negatively on his site and why it offened me. I told him I wasn’t judging. I’m just saying, But he did not take it so well and got super defensive and blew things up. He said to “fuck your values and fuck your whole existance.”

I blogged about it and instead of accepting their mistakes now he and his wife are resorting to posting insults and flagging my site several times saying that it contain sexually explicit products or services, promotions racial, ethnic or social hatred.
