Should I post my podcasts in mono or stereo, keeping in mind that stereo podcasts are twice the size?

well whatever is convenient for you. I’m fine with the current podcasting 😀
I think it’s fine in stereoids, Madge, honey! You could offer both, although that’d suck up even more space…
I think i’ve said this before, i like stereo cuz it’s easier to listen to with headphones. But stereo doesn’t mean it has to be a 128 Kbps file. Maybe 112 or 96 Kbps will do just fine. Try different settings and see what’s best.
You play enough music and externally-produced material that stereo makes sense. But if you have the time, I’ve always liked the idea of a feed that is mono and maybe even 32kbps made from a 22khtz source so that its tinier than Bush’s brain, for people who have bandwidth issues or want to listen on mp3 players like some of the older flash players, or the new phone/camera/player combinations.
If you offer a small file to somebody who will take it, you not only make them happy, but save your bandwidth for those of us who hate coding artifacting more than a fishy taste on bipods.
Anon- Do you know of a way to do multi-format cuntpression in a batch on a mac? I’m thinking of something like Apple’s Compressor.
I am sorry, dear. I am severly mac-challenged. I would do it using the batch-converter that comes with Sound Forge, or I think you can write a script to run LAME as a batch.
My last experience with Apple products was writing assembly code for the 6502 in the Apple II+.
Madge,
Go mono. You can save your podcasts at 80kbps mono and have great sound quality and smaller file sizes. 52 megs is quite a large file.

LameBrain does all kinds of stuff, including batch encoding.
Oops,
please madge stick with your current sound (you have the best sounding quality podcast around) I love your music mixes, the sound qual is brilliant, I love the vinyl you play too, the hiss the crackles just awesome Fake Plastic Trees never sounded better – please stay stereo madge, pleaseeeeeeeee.

OK, anus, just for you.
Copied and pasted from the podcast alley forums:
“It doesn’t cut the size in half. If you’re encoding your MP3s using constant bitrate (CBR), which you should be to ensure compatibility with the widest range of players, it’s the bitrate setting only that determines the size of the file. Choosing mono or stereo will only affect the quality of the sound. However, if you’re using the Joint Stereo setting in your encoder, which you should be, the encoder will examine the left and right channels for differences and increase the encoding quality in proportion to how few differences it finds. In other words, if you’ve got the same signal on both left and right tracks it will encode them in almost exactly the same quality as mono. This allows you to mix stereo and mono signals within a file without compromising voice quality or file size and still getting stereo on your intro and outro (but compromising quality on the music).”
Hey, Madge–I do The Lurid Lounge in 32kbps mono (really saves on the bandwidth), check it out if you want to see what it might sound like:

Madge, there’s only one way to experience your yeast infested cunt….that’s in stereo you hot New York City slit!!

Madge honey, I love you but there are more important things to worry about…like better engineering of this suffering show. My vote is for stereo with more interviews and less fiddling with microphones, levels, ipods, itunes and internets while recording.
I like the ambiance that stereo provides. Madge, if you’re cuntcerned about bandwidth costs and all that jazz, have you thought about BitTorrent? You may not be able to see how many people download your show, but you’d definitely be able to save on cost.
Mono, Madge, mono. By the way, do you want your white trash video back or what? I have a week off.
Madge, I’d go mono at 48, but stereo when there’s an interview so you can pan each voice a bit. I don’t think your format calls for such high quality just for the musical interludes. Why don’t you post your next show in both, and we can vote?
I have been wondering about a close friend of yours by the name of Richard who has done several video blogs.
I was drawn-in by how candid the video blog was. But that could just be because I am a lesbian. Do you think he may be available for an interview or maybe a podcast on the side?
I was wondering maybe if you could find time in a future podcast to interview him, you know, if it works out, and if he is up to it.
Thanks… Love the podcast..

If you can afford the bandwidth, it’s pretty much your call, but I would save the stereo and high bitrate for those shows that hinge on music. I wonder how many non-broadband-using listeners you have? C de f
