Iran_map_2 Maryam knew she was a lesbian from an early age, but in Iran, being gay is punishable by death. Facing far more than parental disapproval, she was kicked out of school, fired from a job, imprisoned, and tortured, all in an unsuccessful effort to change her sexual orientation. Finally, she escaped to France, where her asylum request was still pending at press time.

In this international exclusive, a lesbian victim of torture in the Islamic Republic of Iran speaks on the record for the first time about the horrors she suffered at the hands of a regime that has made homosexuality illegal and punishable by death. Maryam, 25, was expelled from school, forcibly hospitalized, arrested, and tortured for being a lesbian before finally escaping Iran. She eventually wound up in France, where she currently lives in an internment camp. Although she’s filed an application for asylum as a sexual refugee, given the conservative French government’s new crackdown on illegal immigrants, Maryam could be deported back to Iran at any moment. “I don’t know what I will do if the French government sends me back to where my execution pillar is awaiting me!” she says. Doug Ireland spoke to her by phone, aided by a Persian translator, from Paris, where she had traveled for a day to file documents for her asylum request. Here, in her own words, is Maryam’s story.

“I was born in 1981, a child of the Islamic Republic. When I was 16 and in high school (I studied literature and science), I had a classmate named Azi who later became my Female_silhouette_2 girlfriend. We were always together. She would lay her head on my shoulders, touching my hands and my body. With these tender acts the love grew between us. We later shared our feelings and emotions, until it was unbearable for us to separate from each other. The only pleasurable time we had was in school, because we couldn’t see each other anywhere else. Our dream was to rent an apartment and live together.

“One day Azi and I were studying for final exams in her house, and we felt enormousIran_noose_ii_8 desire for each other. We forgot that the house door was unlocked. Azi’s parents came in unexpectedly and found us naked in each other’s arms. The first thing they did was to inform my mother, then the school authorities. My mother was furious and told me, ‘You brought me shame and disgrace. Why don’t you wait to find a good husband and marry? Why are doing such blasphemy?’

“The school authorities gave us a very hard time. They interrogated us and accused us of an illegitimate act against Islamic laws, against Sharia law. Then they expelled us. We each received an official letter from the Ministry of Education in Tehran indicating that because of our unlawful act against Sharia law, we were prohibited from being registered in any other school in the country.

“Azi and I were jobless for one year. We couldn’t even register at night schools. After a year I found a secretarial job in a commercial company. Later, I recommended Azi for work at the same company. Now we were together again.

Female_silhouette_1_1 “One day we went to the restroom together, kissing each other in a secluded place, unaware that we were seen by someone who reported us to the company’s ‘Office of Guiding’ [run under clerical supervision]. Azi was so afraid she resigned her job immediately, but I stood strongly on my feet and answered their questions. They accused me of having psychological problems and said that my behavior with Azi was a sign of a mental disturbance or insanity. They gave me a three-month leave of absence to be under the treatment of doctors. They ordered me to be hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic for two weeks. Each night I had to take a handful of tiny pills, and then I would become unconscious, and wasn’t able to recognize anything around me! After a while they convinced me that I was sick and had psychological problems.

“Months passed, and I went back to work. But I felt worse—the hospitalization had made me crazy. Finally, a sympathetic doctor diagnosed that I’m homosexual and told me that I don’t have any mental health problems. He emphasized that I should return home immediately, but the Office of Guiding did not agreed with his diagnosis.

“At work, one of the officials of the Office of Guiding asked me, ‘Do you see any changes in you?’ I answered, ‘No, I’m the same one as I’ve been before.’ He said, ‘Don’t you want to be a real human like others?‘ I said, ‘I was a real human before!’

“I was fired the same day. When I left work, two men came out of a car and politely asked, ‘May we talk to you for a moment?’ ‘Sure,’ I said. They led me to the car, in which were sitting two more men. They blindfolded me, and I was driven in the car for 45 minutes. They took me to an old building, leading me by taking my sleeves (because they shouldn’t touch my body), then they took me to a room and took off the blindfold. I opened my eyes—now I could see the two men, who were aged 40 to 50.

“‘I must know who you are!’ I said. But instead of answering, they cursed me and spat in my face and said, ‘You’re a filthy, disgraced, shameless pagan.’ Through the door, I could hear men screaming who were under torture.

“One of the men burned my legs with a cigarette. I screamed, and they cursed me. I spent four days in this prison in a dark room with a single bed and cockroaches. They took me to the bathroom only once a day and did not allow me to call my mother. During the four days they tried to ‘treat’ my ‘sickness’ with verses of the Koran. I was hopeless and in despair. I was only 19. After four days they forced me to confess: They dictated to me a statement saying I’d committed a blasphemy and wouldn’t do it anymore. I was so afraid, I signed it. Then I was released but remained under police supervision.

“They took my file to the health branch of the University of Shahid Beheshti and assigned me to two women psychologists who ‘treated’ me for six months. They tried to convince me that I was falsely inculcating myself with the notion that my attraction is only to females. At the end of this ‘treatment,’ they offered to change my sexuality through surgery, and later ordered me to have it. ‘No,’ I said. ‘I’m Maryam, a girl, and I do not want to be a man!’ The female doctor told me, ‘If you don’t change your sexuality and you continue unlawful acts, your future will be a death sentence.’

“Six more months passed, and I was still under the control and supervision of the Ministry of Intelligence. I lost my desire to continue living, as life had no meaning to me anymore, and I wanted to commit suicide, because I had no hope. I was rejected and banished from society. I took a handful of tranquilizers to end my life. I was almost unconscious when I heard my mother’s screaming, while she took me to the hospital. After my mother saved me, I decided to leave the country. I found a smuggler who helped me to go to Turkey.

“I had been saving my money since I had worked in that business company. My mother also helped me financially. I was 21 years old when I left the country by bus two years ago. After two days I was in Turkey. The smugglers stole my passport. From Turkey I went to Greece, then Bulgaria. I had to change vehicles several times, from cars to trucks. And I had to hide in the back of the vehicles. At borders I had to be silent. I finally arrived in France, where I was left in the small city of Alençon, about 100 miles west of Paris.

“I spent the first night in a telephone cabin, then the next day I presented myself at a police station. The French police treated me very nicely. But then they put me in an internment camp, where I now live. We are given a subsistence income of 300 euros each month. I have to extend my temporary resident card every three months. But I’m afraid that I’ll be refused asylum and deported.

“The situation for gays and lesbians in Iran is not good. They can’t live the way they want to and have no rights. The government tells us that execution is the homosexual’s destiny. And lesbians have to be stoned to death. [Iranian president] Ahmadinejad’s government is much worse than the preceding one. If I’m forced to go back to Iran, I’ll definitely be executed.”

“The Woodstock of Politics”
– a caller to The Young Turks radio filibuster for filibuster,
about the grassroots Alito activism.

First, THANK YOU for your hard work over the weekend! As far as I can tell, all key Senators’ D.C. voicemails, and over 90% of the voicemails in their various District offices, were filled up by the end of the weekend. I started hitting random extensions and leaving messages for poor hapless staffers. Every Senator will get the message on Monday morning. Awesome!

For today, I want to back away from the shotgun petitions. It’s frustrating that no one in the Dem leadership will tell us who the “Alito 8″ are (the Democrats who aren’t hewing the party line), and we don’t know how well Kerry and Kennedy are doing at moving them around to our side. But we can make an educated guess, and focus on those key Senators. In addition to calling their offices, we’re also going to target their re-election campaign HQs. (A great idea thought up by our friend and fellow-traveler, Bob Fertik!) Finally, we’re going to hammer away at a simple, but politically powerful, message.

Our theme today is: Lead, Follow, Or Get Out of the Way. In political terms, that’s:

EITHER SUPPORT THE FILIBUSTER
OR ABSTAIN FROM THE CLOTURE VOTE,
BUT DON’T GET IN OUR WAY.

The plan is simple:

FIRST, as each office opens (8:30 or 9 am Eastern, later for District offices as you move West), call every office (DC and District) of YOUR OWN Democratic Senators and urge them to support the filibuster by either voting NO on cloture or by ABSTAINING from the cloture vote. Be short and sweet but hit every office listed below. (If they’re not listed here, they’re probably not a problem — but feel free to make sure!) If you can get their staff to commit to a position, please post a comment here.

SECOND, call the “URGE ABSTENTION” Senators identified immediately below and do the same — say that you hope they vote NO on cloture this afternoon but if they can’t, urge them to ABSTAIN from the cloture vote by doing something good that most Republicans would never do, like visiting wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Hospital instead. (God knows the Republican leadership would never want to draw any attention to the costs of their war!) Doing so will be just as good as a “no” vote but will give them political cover with their conservative voters back home. Again, call their DC AND District offices. And again, if their staff will commit to a position on cloture and/or abstention, please post a comment here.

THIRD, rinse and repeat. That is, go through the “Urge Abstention” list twice, at least for those offices that don’t take detailed caller info like names and addresses.

That’s it. Simply hammer your own Senators and the key Senators. Report back so I can keep things updated. Then watch C-Span at 4:30 Eastern to see what happens! (And please check back here on Tuesday for an after-action report and a strategy for dealing with the result. Win or lose, we are taking this momentum forward to win back our Party and our Nation.)

AGAIN: THANK YOU for doing Yeoman’s work the past few days! You folks are restoring my faith in America. No kidding. Regardless of the outcome of this particular battle, we are waking up the Democratic leadership to the fact that they MUST EITHER PAY ATTENTION TO US or STAND ASIDE so real, responsive leaders can take their place. From time to time people will arise with the vision and the passion to inspire other people, and the bravery to take a stand for justice even if they have to do it alone. Sometimes tyranny maintains its power only by a kind of mental intimidation, a threat that would collapse entirely if it were just challenged. And whether those people are celebrated or not, all who take a stand against tyranny, in any way they can, deserve to be recognized as heros.

So it was with Rosa Parks. She was a simple seamstress who did not set out to be a hero. While she worked as a volunteer secretary for the NAACP, she did not see herself as a national leader. But on that day in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955, she decided she would no longer suffer the humiliation and surrender her bus seat because of her race. In her own words, “The time had just come when I had been pushed as far as I could stand to be pushed I suppose.”

That one simple act of resistance precipitated the Montgomery Bus Boycott, perhaps the key pioneering event in the creation of the whole civil rights movement.

Today we have a Congress controlled by a numerical majority who operate as bullies. They hold votes open for hours at a time while they browbeat and threaten even their own party members. They disrespect and disregard long established rules of procedure and decorum. They exclude the participation of those representing at least half of the American people from any kind of meaningful decision making. And if ever opposed, they threaten they will not hesitate to further abuse their power by moving to abolish the right to filibuster.

Do they not fear the American people? Thousands and tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of our citizens are calling and emailing and faxing their senators right now to demand that Samuel Alito not be allowed to run our Supreme Court into some right wing ditch. And if you are asking, “Who will lead the filibuster that will stop this?” If you are asking yourself, “Who will stand up against the intimidation and the fear and expose those bullies for the fringe minority that they truly are?” The answer is . . . YOU are doing it right now.

With every personal message you send, you are telling our senators that it is time for we the people to take a stand. With every phone call you make, you are telling them it’s time to take our country back. With every fax, YOU are a hero for democracy. The majority of the American people no longer believe in done deals. The other side has already lost, and the proof of it is that they are reduced to making empty verbal threats. They’ll clean our clock one Republican senator was quoted yesterday as saying.

But privately the other side is telling its own few supporters that something dreadful has happened, that we actually think we can win, and that we will succeed unless they redouble their own lobbying efforts. And it’s not working for them. On the Ed Shultz show yesterday, and Ed does not screen his calls, EVERY person who called in was demanding that there be a filibuster if necessary to save our Supreme Court from Samuel Alito.

There is only one way to deal with a bully. You must stand up to them. And we must keep standing up to them. We must keep calling our senators to tell them that the American people support them for taking a courageous stand. They must stand alone on the floor of the Senate, but we must continue rallying to their side. If the other side declares war on the filibuster we must call and call again to express our outrage. Each of us in our own way must find the courage to stand individually and declare, “The time has just come when I’ve been pushed as far as I can stand to be pushed.”

There is a classic cliffhanger you’ve probably seen in more than one horror movie and it generally goes like this. One character in the movie is in some kind of a trance under an evil spell, and their inaction or unwitting complicity is required for the evil plan to be fulfilled. And you see the hero of the movie shaking them, and yelling at them, “Snap out of it!” because only by working together can the good and the just prevail. Because it is a movie at the last minute the hero always succeeds in getting the other character to come to their senses and everyone cheers. And that’s exactly what is going on right now with the nightmare nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

Is “nightmare” too strong a word? Actually, that’s the word that Bill Frist used just the other day in referring to their own nominee. For decades they have dreamt of overturning every progressive precedent since the New Deal . . . for privacy rights, for labor rights, for the rights of people to be protected from socially irresponsible corporations, and more. And now they even want to absolve the president himself from having to obey the laws of the people as passed by Congress, with Sam Alito the prime mover and judicial mastermind behind the so-called “unitary executive” theory. That is nothing more than dictatorship with a make-over. A dream to them perhaps, but truly said a very scary nightmare for the rest of us.

Be ye not deceived by the corporate media talking heads who have taken over our airwaves. They speak of “done deals” to try to discourage some from taking action, like zombies in a horror movie. The last thing they want is for more and more of us to suddenly WAKE UP now and realize that we not only DO have the power to put a stop to a reactionary takeover our highest court, we have a DUTY as citizens to do so by telling our senators that they must take a stand and that we will support them for doing so.

Alito’s problem is that he is NOT a judge. He is an advocate. He has a lifelong commitment to being an advocate, and here is the important part . . . his supporters are pushing him precisely because THEY believe he will be their advocate. They drop kicked their own Miers because she did not have enough proven fealty to the agenda of the extremist Federalist society or the doctrine of a particular religious group. He is just like Roberts, a stealth nominee who promised to respect the will of the people, but then immediately lurched to the far right to cast his first vote on the Supreme Court to try to strike down the TWICE expressed will of the people by voter initiative in Oregon.

In 1985 Alito stated categorically his belief that a woman’s right to privacy is not constitutional. At his hearing he refused to say if he still holds this view, the equivalent of taking the Fifth Amendment. But Robert Bork said the other day that HE believes without a doubt that Alito is still that same guy. His supporters are only interested in installing a lock down vote who will rule as THEY want every time, without regard to the facts, the law or prior precedent. They want our country to be ruled by the kingly decree of their presidential signing statements, one of Alito’s own personal brainstorms. And just like Frist, they will admit it even if Alito himself will not. In fact, they are bragging about it.

What Alito’s advocates fear the most is that the American people will suddenly come to their senses, that more and more will speak out as they are doing now, and that our representatives will listen and obey the will of the people. That is why they’ve been in such a hurry to try to hustle this thing though, pushing for it happen “quickly” despite the fact that Sandra Day O’Connor is still on the bench for the duration. But thousands, and tens of thousands, and hundreds of thousands ARE speaking out in strong opposition.

Please add your voice to the growing chorus and the people will surely prevail. Together we will dispel the dark cloud over our Supreme Court. Because for people like Bill Frist real participatory democracy would be the worst nightmare of all. That would be a nightmare on a different street, a nightmare on FRIST Street.

“I just heard in the news about these two gay teenagers being hanged in public in city of Mashad, one of the northern cities in Iran. Apparently one of the guys was not even 18 years old. According to the article, they spent 14 months in prison and recieved many lashes. They had shown remorse for their action and had no idea getting engaged in homosexual acts will result in death!”
