First of all, thanks for the ‘grumm whore.

Preaching to the choir sistaaaaah. I was in a similar situation years ago and desperately needed healthcare. My only option was to drastically cut my work hours so I could get state help instead.

So basically I chose to be poor, as it was the only way I could get medical help. That was my only option, unless I won the lottery or some crap.

Good times!

Honey if you want to stop thinking about new tech, STOP READING TECH BLOGS!
That being said, about 50% of new tech that I become aware of is via your progrum. If it wasn’t for you I’d never have heard of people like Ribert Schobel and would have forgotten who Steve jobs was, but then, I don’t read tech blogs 😉

I am in a very similar situation. Thankfully in the state of MD we have a guaranteed high risk pool that anyone with major illness or that was denied individual coverage is eligible for. Unlike the IL system it’s not lottery based (at least not yet). The premiums run about 150% more. The irony is, it’s administered by the same company that denied me.

In the short term you should lobby your IL lawmakers to open up the lottery or eliminate it.

Longer term we’re fucked.

Madge, you want an objective view on America’s Health Debate? It serves fantastically well as Comic Relief, I’m sorry to say.

More seriously;
It all boils down to “Right vs. Privilege”.

In America nothing comes for free and this makes the people accept inequality between people. If you’re poor, “Shame On You”!

In e.g. Western Europe there is not the same feeling that the Government is your enemy and that all “They” want is to steal your money, i.e. Tax.

This, IMHO, is because it’s visible that the Government actually invests money in e.g. tangible infrastructural improvements, social organization projects (be it minimizing bureaucracy, Immigration/Integration programs, etc.) and most importantly; more or less free, universal Health Care.

In America, Health Care is a privilege and in the rest of the world it is a Human Right that the Government should ensure.

Now, my guess is that since Americans in general do not like Government Control, they have an aversion to change the system to something else. This due to PR, Scare Tactics from the “Corporate America”?

Or is the problem actually on a personal level, i.e. people do not want to do the real homework when Fox News (Religious Leaders, Cheryl Merkowski) can shove their views, opinions, lapse in your face and call it the truth.

Or is it the Educational System’s fault? Less and less money to schools, bouncing the responsibility of preparing children for life between the school and the parents. Not to mention that getting a Uni degree will put you in “semi-eternal” debt.

Or is it the media that do not do it’s work exposing the true connections, dealings that goes on in the society? Is this because of media consolidation, corporate/syndicated media, traffic shaping?

Or am I way off?

It’s all of those things combined. America is set up and run as a slave state. It’s simply a matter of degree. We don’t have open slavery any longer, but there are myriad systems in place to produce the same result.

The population at large is worked to death to enrich the people at the top. If the system doesn’t need your work to continue operating you get nothing. The “lucky ones” are those of us wasting our life doing pointless work whose benefits we never see. It’s a giant lie that most of the population is too terrified to admit to and face.

Cheryl is also to blame.

They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?

“And believe me these wonderful kids
deserve your cheers
because each one of them is
fighting down pain, exhaustion, weariness,
struggling to keep going
battling to win
and isn’t that the American Way?”

America is like the very top of the food pyramid-fats and oils. The world has way too much of it (the u.s.) for its general well being. A healthier world would not indulge its self and gorge on this fascination with the west.It should concentrate itself on creating a utopia wherever it may be, and this includes a healthy populace that has a medical system that works for all and is self sustaining. As long as we here let graft and fraud rule the day we are showing the world…”hey! see here, we have an archetype for inequality… but put us up on a pedistal be cause of our love of arteface and illusion’.All that glitters may not be gold, but it sure looks pretty from the balcony seats. The only recourse to us that live here is to laugh all the way to a welcome grave, which is why I created HAGATHA.

“Sorry we don’t serve CEO’s here” Nice one Madge!
I’m setting up an ye olde guillotine shoppe especially with corporate insurance company bods & such in mind. Definitely don’t like their corn. Thanks again for the insight into aspects of the american healthcare system. Aswell as being unecessarily convoluted, it does seem to have a “kick a man when he’s down” feel about it which don’t make no sense for healthcare do it. Angry.
Alraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiight! Hokay.

Good grum!
I miss these mostly Madge monologue shows.

If the current dorm-related activity dries up I wouldn’t discount working at Starbucks. I’d say it’s better for people to work in jobs that aren’t their bliss than to not work at all. Choosing not to work when there’s work out there and the ability to take it up can sometimes lock people into an increasingly low aspiration/motivation slippery slope that that ends with them doing little other than drinking from cups in urinals at the taxpayers expense.

How it works in Britain.

I can register with any doctor I like.

If I need to go to the doctor, it costs me nothing.

If I need to go to the hospital, it costs me nothing.

If I need prescription drugs, the price is capped to a weekly maximum.

When I go to the dentist, the consultation costs £19 ($30). There are set prices for all operations.

For dentistry and prescriptions, retired people, pregnant women and children pay nothing. If you can’t afford them, you can claim the cost back from the government by filling in a form.

Companies still provide private health coverage, and some people still buy it. The insurance companies, BUPA and the private hospitals seem to be doing just fine.

Apparently, though, this makes me deeply unfree and a participant in an evil socialist cult. That may be so.

The way you have it in the US *is* broken. It’s not at all normal. It’s totally fucking barbaric. When I travel in Europe, I’m never worried about what’ll happen if I get sick in France or Germany or whatever – you carry a card around called EHIC which guarantees that if you need emergency treatment in those countries, the UK will cover it and they’ll cover (iirc) getting you home. But in the US, I load up on really good travel insurance.

If it doesn’t get fixed, it’s only going to get worse. I mean, fuck, if your house is on fire, you call the firefighters. If you see someone with a gun, you can call the cops. Why not take the healthcare thing further and require people to have insurance to be covered by the police or fire? You need a credit card at the ready to call 911. Why not? It’s the free market at work.

I concur.

It’s a thought that I even find extremely hard to grasp – not having free health coverage. But, then again; Sweden, Poland, the U.K. – we don’t have the free choice. I guess we’re all Commies.
Innit?
