Dear America,

I am so excited for what’s happening today in America. The gay community has not since before the AIDS crisis of the 1980s been so politically empowered. I would give almost anything to be a part of what’s happening right now only because the first 16 years of my gay existence was right there out in the open and already equal in America. I have so many dead friends from issue related suicide, murder, and illness and each one of them paid their taxes like everyone else. I will never forget the education that I was lucky to receive. Already feeling equal, it took me a long time to realize how the rest of the country felt. I knew there were always assholes, but kept faith that the greater portion were thinking and feeling human beings. Homosexuality is funny to laugh at or with on television, but as loving people we are not recognized equally and that’s why so many hide behind facades and stay close inside the herd. Anyone who is over 30 should have the enlightenment to know that it doesn’t matter who you love as long as you can find it. If they don’t then I question their own ability to love. But this is not just about gay rights anymore. This is a fight for basic human rights that a majority has taken for granted. Today something begins and it will cause something to move. Perhaps it won’t be this week, or this year, but the youth who see this movement now will be empowered to stand their ground. They will know something we weren’t sure of 20 years ago. They will demand our rights as equal tax paying human beings. They will see the interference of the Church in State, will recognize the paradox and make their judgments.

It is on a day like today when I can say, “Thank God”. America is doing something in truly democratic right now. Democracy, freedom, and equality do not come easy. I wish a great blessing for the demonstration. I hope they do whatever is necessary, and that they can do so using their better judgment. Germany will never have full gay marriage until some place like America makes it happen first. We will have our domestic partnerships until as a community we too are empowered. Equal rights means for everyone or no one.

I wish you all well and a monster show for an equally monster outcome. Be patient but stand your ground.

Sincerely
-Ceven
