The civil union / gay marriage thing is an odd one.

I went off at a BBC radio reporter a few years ago when they asked me about civil partnerships, just after they were announced. Normally when I talk about this stuff I take the moderate “any progress is good” stance but for some reason the blood rushed to my head because it sounded like such a lame way to disguise gay marriage.

The actual civil partnerships I hear about these days are for gay couples and they treat them like a proper marriage, so in a way, it’s just a name, but my uncharacteristic outburst showed me that true acceptance in law and society seems just as important. Nobody asks for gay marriage in this country now, they have civil partnerships. Maybe it is better to push all the way.

Apart from the first few excruciating minutes where you were trying to get hold of Rachel, this was a really, really genuinely great episode not just for Rachel-loving masochists! These long rambling episodes usually run out of steam after fourty minutes but you were all on fire tonight especially Madge. A+
