Disturbing Email I Just Received

This is NOT a post to be skimmed. I want to make sure you understand that this is an email exchange in reverse chronological order. A “friend” Michael Yamnitsky send me a long racist email and I replied to it. Then he replied to my reply and I replied back. My replies are in italics. Michael’s email is [email protected] .

Oh really? There’s a Russian proverb that says “pee him in the eyes, he keeps saying ‘it’s G-d dew”. Sometimes obvious things ARE racist — or perhaps you’re trying to tell me that Muslim males are NOT the terrorists?

That’s racist. Please remove me from your mailing list.

It’s so fucking depressing when grown men can’t comprehend the notion that the concept of “terrorism” isn’t strictly Middle Eastern.
It happens ALL over the world, crossing nationalities and races. I’m only 18 years old and I’ve gotten into countless arguements with people triple my age over shit like this.

What kind of mailing list was this?

Wow… and we’re not guilty of terrorism ourselves? It slays me that people can actually believe that we’re not mutually involved. Do people like this believe we’re sitting around defenseless and not killing people?

Dealing with ignorance is a very difficult thing. This man is making judgments based on his knowledge, and his intellectual capacity, both of which are deficient.

First… he’s not the author of this quiz. His lack of knowledge, and his lack of intellectual capacity is what makes him accept it as a valid argument

He doesn’t know, and can’t reason, that for this to be even a partially valid argument, one would have to put the 13 incidents cited, up against the total number of terrorist acts that occurred during the same time span on this Earth. If he did he would quickly see that there is nothing very unique about Islamic criminals, compared to criminals practicing (or claiming to practice) other religions. He might, if he did his research, see that the thing that associates extremists as a group is RELIGION. Not any particular religion, but religion itself. Most extreme, unwarranted, and baseless beliefs are rooted in religious faith.

But more importantly, his lack of intellectual skills prevents him from realizing that associating a criminal act with the professed religion of the criminal is not only unsound, but pointless. Measure this for ALL criminal acts… and you will quickly discover that the percentages closely match the percentages of the population practicing those religions.

Then… he has no idea what the word “extremist” means. If he did he would realize that the Saudis that destroyed the World Trade Center no more represented Islam, than Timothy McVey represented Christianity. Neither religion condones such an act. But to know that would require reading the Bible and the Koran, something this person clearly hasn’t done, and doesn’t want to do.

The biggest problem facing the United States…. ignorance… and the growing disrespect for knowledge. The internet is partially to blame. Before the internet, in order to get your views heard… you had to approach a publisher. Publishers judged works very carefully before investing in them. Now the world’s biggest fool sees him/herself as being on equal footing with people of great knowledge and experience.

That’s who you are dealing with.

P.W.’s bang on. But it seems to me that the dangerous nature of “generalizing” just isn’t getting through to the masses. Generalizing about anything is shortsighted and always wrong in some way. You have to judge based on the individual and that’s it. I mean this fellow has just incriminated Cat Stevens. Even the spouses or brothers and sisters of the bombers in question surely aren’t any more likely than you or I to do this kind of extremist violence. It’s this lack of logic that astounds me. By the same extension you could replace “Muslim” with “Human” and get the same results. Stupidity is very dangerous.

But I don’t believe the internet is a liability. At least I hope it’s not. The free flow of information is what I hope can rid America and the rest of the world of its vast stores of misinformation.

Ironically, I got this same e-mail (with fewer updates) about 3 years ago from my cousin–a lesbian! Despite her orientation, she seems to go in for those “Hurray for America, smash the peacenik” e-mails that get seem to spread like the clap. I told her the same thing at the time: “Please don’t send me anymore of these things.” I reminded her that, as gays, it would be so easy for US to be the next demonized group, and not to buy into the “mob-think” that puts everyone into such a pseudo-patriotic tizzy.

Strangely, I stopped receiving ALL e-mails from her after that…although we still talk. I don’t think she even agrees with everything she forwards, but it amazes me how many people blindly forward shit without really thinking about it.

And also, as to what Mizez S. said, it’s true that whenever someone who doesn’t fit the “racial” profile commits an offense, the crazy-flag-wavers seem to just look the other way and not notice.

Men whose masculinity is challenged become more inclined to support war or buy an SUV, a new study finds.

Their attitudes against gays change, too.

Cornell University researcher Robb Willer used a survey to sample undergraduates. Participants were randomly assigned feedback that indicated their responses were either masculine of feminine.

The women had no discernable reaction to either type of feedback in a follow-up survey.

But the guys’ reactions were “strongly affected,” Willer said today.

“I found that if you made men more insecure about their masculinity, they displayed more homophobic attitudes, tended to support the Iraq war more and would be more willing to purchase an SUV over another type of vehicle,” said Willer said. “There were no increases [in desire] for other types of cars.”

Those who had their masculinity threatened also said they felt more ashamed, guilty, upset and hostile than those whose masculinity was confirmed, he said.

For those of you who are the great supporters of liberté, égalité, fraternité — the Muslim world’s reaction (if it could be even called that) to Danish cartoons (yes, cartoons, mind you!) should be a clear enough signal of WHO EXACTLY IT IS that is threatening the western civilization. Wake up and smell the coffee, for you certainly seem to be in denial!
